Even though Sri Lanka is a very small island, it is essential to plan your trip based on the region you plan to visit. The island can be visited year-round thanks to its tropical climate, but the best time depends on where you go. Sri Lanka experiences two main monsoon seasons: the Maha monsoon (October to January) affecting the north and east, and the Yala monsoon (May to August) affecting the south and west. The peak season for most travellers is December to April, ideal for beaches, cultural tours, and hill country treks, while the low season (May to August) has fewer crowds but occasional rain. South coast beaches are best from January to April and mid-July to September, while the east coast shines between May and September. Yes, you do! Most travellers require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — also known as an e-visa — to enter Sri Lanka, unless you’re from a country eligible for the current free visa regime.

As per the official ETA website (www.eta.gov.lk), citizens of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan can visit visa-free for 30 days with double entry, but must still apply online for a free ETA before travelling.

Travellers from other countries can apply for an ETA online through the same official portal. The process is simple and usually approved within 24 hours. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of arrival.

A standard tourist ETA allows you to stay in Sri Lanka for 30 days and can be extended after arrival.

Note: Visitors from Cameroon, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Ghana cannot apply online. They must apply for an ETA through a Sri Lankan sponsor at the Department of Immigration & Emigration in Colombo, as required by government regulations.

Sri Lanka’s local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR), available in notes of Rs. 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, and 5000. When exchanging cash, it’s best to keep smaller denominations handy, as local shops and rural businesses may have difficulty breaking larger notes, especially Rs. 5000.

Credit cards — especially Visa and MasterCard — are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and most stores across the island. American Express is accepted at select establishments.

For convenience, it is recommended to use an internationally valid credit card whenever possible, along with carrying some cash for small purchases or trips to remote areas. Currency exchange can be done at banks, authorised money changers, or the airport. Remember that online exchange rates are for guidance only — actual rates depend on the issuing bank at the time of the transaction.
